Wei Lab – Enable Better Research Through Better Phenotyping

The Wei Lab at Vanderbilt University Medical Center was founded to address the growing needs of the scientific community for Electronic Health Record (EHR) based phenotyping. The primary goal of the Wei Lab is to enable better research through better phenotyping. The Wei Lab is based in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, collaborates with various departments around the university and beyond, and has received supports from multiple agents including the American Heart Association (AHA), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), and National Institute on Aging (NIA).

Resources

We focus on developing novel informatics approaches/resources to optimize phenotyping performance.

MEDI–an ensemble MEDication Indication resource

MEDI (MEDication Indication) is an ensemble medication indication resource for primary and secondary uses of electronic medical record (EMR) data. MEDI was created based on multiple commonly used medication resources (RxNorm, MedlinePlus, SIDER 4.1, Mayo Clinic, WebMD, and Wikipedia ) and by leveraging both ontology and natural language processing (NLP) techniques.

Phecode–Grouping ICD9/10 for high-throughput Phenotyping

Phecode groups relevant ICD-10 and ICD-10-CM codes into clinical meaningful phenotypes thus enable researchers to leverage accumulated ICD-10 and ICD-10-CM data for PheWAS in the EHR.

PheMAP–high-throughput Phenotyping by Measured, Automated Profile

PheMAP is a general, automatic, and portable approach to enable accurate high-throughput phenotyping within electronic health records (EHR). PheMAP quantifies relationships between phenotypes and relevant clinical concepts represented by standard medical terminologies. For each individual, PheMAP assigns a score and probability of having a particular phenotype from identified related concepts within EHRs.
